And We’re Off…

I am trying to get an early start this morning because my To-Do list is FAR TOO LONG!  I won’t bore you with all the details, but my day will include grocery shopping, checking out our local ReStore for some home project necessities and the dreaded, never-ending, no-good chore called cleaning.  I also need to work on my paper/presentation some, so it’s going to be a busy day!

Fiesta, Ole!

If my mother were writing this blog, her Daily Obsessions section would ALWAYS include dishes.  She loves dishes, just loves them.  Throughout my high school and college years, my mother attempted to court me into her addiction by starting my dish collection – at 16 years old!  I’ve always loved the look of Fiestaware and the way all the colors blended so well together, but that takes planning.  Something we didn’t consider when we started the process! Fiestaware prints their colors by collection, so if you don’t get all of your sets in a certain timeframe, your color could be discontinued.  In other words, starting a collection fifteen years ago was probably not the best idea for my mother and I. Why?  Because we have NO COMPLETE SETS!  I did receive some beautiful pieces for our wedding and plan to use those to create one complete dinner set, but the rest of the odds and ends we’ve have collected over my lifetime are going to have to go!  I’m not one to hold on to things for too long.  Anyway, I checked online last night and it appears I may have one color (3 5-piece settings) that were discontinued in 2002?  Sweet.  So those might be a bit trickier to sell.  The others have been listed on Amazon, one penny short of what Amazon is selling them for!  Luckily there are websites like Replacements, Ltd. who purchase rare/discontinued sets from people, store them in their warehouse and sell them when they can.  So today, I will be taking pictures of my rare, but perfectly new dishes and emailing to Replacements, Ltd. in hopes that they come back with some HUGE price!  I’ll be sure to let you know what I hear back from them.  Their website says 2-3 days, so hopefully I have an answer by Friday.  Otherwise, I may try to sell them on eBay (placing a reserve on them) to see if anyone chomps at the bit.  I haven’t had the greatest luck with eBay, but maybe it will pull through for me this time!

Home Projects

I am heading to ReStore today to check out some of their items.  ReStore is a retail store tied in with Habitat for Humanity.  If you are ever in need of ANYTHING for a home project, check out ReStore FIRST!  They have wonderful items for gardening, home improvement projects, etc.  Their website says:  ReStore resale outlets sell new fixtures, as well as gently used furniture, home accessories, appliances and building materials.  There are ReStore outlets all over the United States.  To find one in your area, check here.  Today, I am on a mission to find a bookshelf for the baby’s room.  I don’t want or need anything fancy, just something I can paint to help liven up the room.  I’ve also heard they have cheap paint, so while I’m there I’ll check that out too!  I’m also going to see if they have any new sump pumps and PVC pipes.  Oh friends, that’s another story for another day!  I’ve never been to the ReStore in our area, so I’m kind of excited to see all of their treasures.  I’ll post pictures of anything I find.

Speaking of pictures!  I have had a lot of people ask if/when I’ll post pictures of the baby’s room.  I am going to wait until it’s ALL complete before I post anything.  I am getting a few last minute items for Christmas, so by then everything should be done.  It’s looking adorable though and I can’t wait to show it off.  Here is a sneak peak of the border my Grandma Irma and I worked on when she was here in September:

Here is the room before we made some necessary changes to it!

And here is a proud daddy painting away at the ceiling.  My neck hurts just looking at this picture!  And yes ladies, my man proudly bares his muscles around the house!

We painted the room in the first part of September.  It was one of our first home improvement projects.  We were so excited to have a new room for our little one that we searched for inspirational pictures, went out and bought paint and WALLA.  We had a baby’s room!  I’ve  always thought a baby’s rooms with a blue ceilings would be adorable.  Why not let the little one imagine they are outside while laying in their crib?  Also, the grey walls are meant to help blend all the other colors of the room together.  We didn’t go with a theme but decided it would be a hodge-podge of things we love…including that mobile in the picture above that has been in my various homes the past four years.  It’s so peaceful to me and reminds me of all the places I have lived.  I also have another mobile over the changing table, but that will have to wait until the Big Reveal sometime late-December or early-January.

Baby Book

I’ve officially started on the Baby Book this week.  My friend Becky had a wonderful idea of doing everything online and then printing a hard copy of the book at the end of the year.  So, I’m stealing her idea and have been using to create a book for the baby.  When I am home over the Holidays, I’m going to check my old baby book and gather some ideas to add to ours.  I know I want to write the story of when/how we found out we were pregnant, the move from Kentucky to Missouri and the amazing things that happened in our lives as soon as we found out we were being blessed with a this little one.  The whole experience was really powerful to me and I want the baby to know what an impact he or she had on our lives even BEFORE we officially met face-to-face!  One thing that really upsets me though, is our lack of photos along the process.  We have SOME pictures, but nothing wonderful.  The bad thing about phones now is that you take pictures with them but they are NEVER as beautiful as the ones you could take with a camera.  So…the pregnancy portion of the baby book will be more text than photos, but I PROMISE to take many pictures of our new little one.  I’ve certainly learned my lesson in the past few months.

Becky also makes year-in-review books for her and husband.  What a great idea!  Over the year, she just slowly puts pictures in a book and at the end of the year, she prints them off for whoever wants one!  I’m totally stealing this idea too for 2011.

Okay, I need to get some things done!

Daily Obsessions:

  • Picasa is what I use to store my pictures.  It’s easy to use and has some fun editing capabilities.  Plus, it’s a Google program and they can do no wrong!
  • This is a cute idea if you are wanting/needing to buy a little gift for co-workers but don’t want to spend a lot of money!  I love it!  You can even print the tags off from the website.  via
  • Do you have a little boy on your Christmas list?  If so, I think he needs this.  And at $10, you can’t really beat that price.

Great job with the painting! I like the blue and gray; as much as I love themes, your plans for the room will make it easier for change when the baby gets older…and the flags look awesome. I’m excited to see the more-finished product (because room-decorating never ends).
Also, the Omaha Steaks–great deal! We have taken advantage of that before, and it never disappoints.
